    UNESCO LISTING: 3 VILLAGES, 1995

  • What to combine

Takayama old town sits about 50 minutes away and pairs well, and several tours cover both in a day. From Osaka, a 2-day winter tour with a hotel night and breakfast costs $226.17 per person.

Shirakawa-go Tours by Departure City

Where you sleep decides the tour. The express bus from Kanazawa takes about 1 hour 20 minutes and from Toyama about 1 hour 20 minutes, from Takayama about 50 minutes and from Nagoya about 2 hours 30 minutes. The shorter the ride, the more of the day is left for the village.

From Kanazawa

Kanazawa has the most departures and the shortest ride, about 1 hour 20 minutes each way. The pick is the Shirakawa-go Morning Guided Tour from Kanazawa: $76 per person, 5 hours, 4.9 from 1,833 reviews, with about 2 hours 20 minutes in the village on an English guide and a Kenrokuen finish by around 13:00. House entries are not in the price, the village itself is free to walk.

For a full day, the Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa Day with 2 Local Experiences adds Kenrokuen, the Higashi Chaya district and two craft workshops for $114 per person over 9 hours, lunch extra. The Shirakawa-go and Takayama Day Trip by Bus from Kanazawa costs $100 per person over 8 hours and pairs the village with Takayama old town, lunch extra. The JTB Shirakawa-go and Takayama Tour from Kanazawa at $166.72 per person adds a thatched house visit and an optional drop-off at Takayama Station.

Both UNESCO areas fit in one day on the Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Bus Tour from Kanazawa, $94.78 per person over 7 hours 45 minutes with a Hida set lunch included. The Shirakawa-go, Gokayama and Wood Carving Tour from Kanazawa adds the Inami carving town, Zuisenji Temple and paper-making in Gokayama for $177 per person.

From Takayama

Takayama is the closest city, about 50 minutes by bus. The Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Nohi Bus Tour from Takayama costs $84 per person over 7 hours and is the only listing with the Minkaen open-air museum entry and the observatory shuttle in the price. The Takayama and Shirakawa-go Guided Day from Takayama does Takayama Jinya and the old town in the morning, then 1.5 hours guided in the village, $155 per person.

Moving on with luggage, the Takayama to Kanazawa bus with a Shirakawa-go stop is a seat only, no guide, $69 per person, departing 8:20 and arriving Kanazawa at 13:10 with bags kept on board.

From Nagoya

Nagoya is about 2 hours 30 minutes away by express bus. The lowest price here is the Shirakawa-go and Takayama Day Tour from Nagoya at $49 per person over 9 hours. It also sells a Light-Up departure on the four winter nights, with no observatory access.

The Shirakawa-go and Takayama Bus Tour from Nagoya costs $59.29 per person over 9 to 10 hours with a conductor and an optional lunch. From Tokyo or Osaka

Tokyo is far, so the Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa Day Trip from Tokyo is one long day of 8 to 16 hours at $71 per person. The bullet train from Tokyo is only on that option. It pairs the village with Kenrokuen and the Higashi Chaya district.

From Osaka, the 2-Day Shirakawa-go and Hida no Sato Winter Tour from Osaka costs $226.17 per person over 2 days with a hotel night and breakfast. Its light-up is the Hida no Sato light-up in Takayama, not the Shirakawa-go Light-Up.

A Shirakawa-go Tour Itinerary, Stop by Stop

A typical Shirakawa-go tour itinerary is a morning coach, about 2 to 3 hours in the village and a second stop before the ride back. Two listings print their timings in enough detail to show the shape of the day.

The Kanazawa Morning Tour

The Shirakawa-go Morning Guided Tour from Kanazawa is the shortest shape. It leaves Kanazawa Station by coach, spends about 2 hours 20 minutes in the village with an English guide and ends at Kenrokuen Garden around 13:00, which leaves the afternoon free in Kanazawa.

  • Kanazawa Station: departure by coach
  • Coach to Shirakawa-go: 80 minutes
  • Shirakawa-go with the guide: about 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Coach back: 1 hour
  • Finish at Kenrokuen Garden around 13:00

The Two-Village Day

The Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Bus Tour from Kanazawa prints clock times for each stop, so you can see how a two-village day fits. It meets at 7:50 at JR Kanazawa Station, leaves at 8:00 and is back at 15:45.

Days with Takayama

Tours that add Takayama split the day in two. The Shirakawa-go and Takayama Day Tour from Nagoya gives 120 minutes in the Sanmachi historic district, a 30-minute lunch break and 120 minutes in Shirakawa-go before the return to Nagoya. Expect a 9-hour day or longer on every Nagoya departure.

Shirakawa-go in Winter and the Light-Up

Yes, you can see the Shirakawa-go Light-Up on a tour, on four evenings only: 11, 17, 24 and 31 January 2027, from 17:30 to 19:30. Every visitor needs an advance reservation.

Light-Up Rules

No tickets are sold on the day, so a traveller who arrives without a reservation cannot take part. Observation deck tickets come only with a qualifying overnight stay or a qualifying bus tour and are not sold separately. Reserved private car parking round 2 opens at 13:00 on 1 December 2026 at $44.23 (¥7,000) for 1 to 5 people.

All vehicles need studless winter tyres. Drones and filming are prohibited. Light-Up night temperatures can fall to -10 to 0 C, so bring warm clothes, anti-slip shoes and a flashlight.

Nohi Bus says there is no fixed bus back to Takayama after the Light-Up, which makes a tour the only way to see it from there. The 2-Day Shirakawa-go and Hida no Sato Winter Tour from Osaka shows the village in snow, but its light-up is the Hida no Sato light-up in Takayama, not the Shirakawa-go Light-Up.

What Is Shirakawa-go Famous For?

Shirakawa-go is famous for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses, the steep thatched roofs of Ogimachi village. It was inscribed by UNESCO in 1995 together with Ainokura and Suganuma in Gokayama.

Gassho-Zukuri Houses

Gassho means praying hands, a name for the steep triangular thatched gable built to carry heavy snow. The houses grew in number in the latter half of the 19th century because their big roof spaces suited silkworm raising. The irori fireplace inside keeps the thatch dry and stops rot.

Re-roofing is done by the whole village working together, a shared labour called yui.

A Village People Still Live In

Ogimachi has over 100 gassho-zukuri buildings and more than 100 families, many living in gassho-style farmhouses. Residents follow three principles for their houses: do not sell, do not rent, do not destroy. The area has been an important traditional building preservation district since 1976, and UNESCO registration followed in 1995.

Staying Overnight

The village lists more than 40 places to stay, and reservations are required in all cases. Rooms can be booked online on the association Stay page up to about 3 months ahead. Night walks are for overnight guests only, so day visitors cannot see the village after dark.

How Much Is a Shirakawa-go Tour?

A Shirakawa-go tour costs from $49 per person from Nagoya to $226.17 for two days from Osaka, and a private car runs $575 per vehicle. What moves the price is not the village, which is free to walk, but what the listing adds around it.

Tour Prices by Band

This table groups every tour on the page by its listed price per person, with the private car shown per vehicle. Prices, starting cities and lengths come from each listing.

What Pushes the Price Up

Three things lift a tour above the cheapest seats. The first is entries: the Nohi Bus tour from Takayama puts the Minkaen open-air museum and the observatory shuttle in its $84, and the small-group tour from Nagoya includes one thatched house. The second is a second destination with its own tickets, such as Kenrokuen on the Kanazawa day with two local experiences or Takayama Jinya on the guided day from Takayama. The third is group size: the small-group and private options cost more per head than a full coach.

Lunch is extra on most tours. The Gokayama bus tour from Kanazawa includes a Hida set lunch, and the Nagoya bus tour includes lunch only if you book that option.

What Going Alone Costs

The comparison point is the public bus. Hokutetsu charges $17.69 (¥2,800) each way for an adult from Kanazawa Station West Gate, with a seat reservation required. On the ground, Wada House and Kanda House each charge $2.53 (¥400) for adults, and a small locker at the bus terminal costs $3.16 (¥500).

A tour costs more than these figures side by side, and it buys a held seat, a guide in the village and the second stop of the day.

Dos and Don'ts on a Shirakawa-go Tour

Do

  • Do reserve bus seats ahead, because Hokutetsu requires a seat reservation on every highway bus and the Takayama to Shirakawa-go route is reservation-only from 1 December 2026.
  • Do carry cash for house entries and the observatory shuttle, because most village facilities charge 300 to 400 yen per person and the shuttle takes a small cash fare.
  • Do bring warm anti-slip shoes in winter, because February snow can reach 170 cm or more and Light-Up nights fall to -10 to 0 C.
  • Do take your rubbish with you, because there are no rubbish bins in the village.

Don't

  • Don't fly a drone, because the village prohibits all drones to protect residents' privacy and the historic houses.
  • Don't walk into gardens or houses for photos, because gassho houses are lived in and the village asks visitors to respect residents' privacy.
  • Don't arrive on a Light-Up night without a reservation, because no tickets are sold on the day and unreserved visitors cannot take part.
  • Don't count on a bus back to Takayama after the Light-Up, because Nohi Bus says there is no fixed service afterwards.

What Can I Do on a One-Day Trip to Shirakawa-go?

A one-day trip is enough. Walk the village in about 2 to 3 hours, cross Deai Bridge from Seseragi Park, see the roofs from the observation deck and step inside a gassho house.

Houses You Can Enter

Most village facilities charge $2.53 (¥400) or less and the open-air museum charges $5.06 (¥800). These are the official fees and hours for the two houses most visitors enter.

HouseEntry (adult)HoursClosed
Wada House$2.53 (¥400)9:00-17:00Irregular closures
Kanda House$2.53 (¥400)9:00-17:00Wednesdays

The Observation Deck

The Shiroyama observation deck gives the classic view over the village. A shuttle runs from in front of Wada House every 20 minutes from 10:00 to 14:40, pausing 12:00 to 13:00, and the last uphill bus leaves at 15:40. The walk up takes about 20 minutes on foot.

The Ogimachi Castle Site area is free to enter but is private property, so visitors are asked to use it with consideration.

Village Rules

Ogimachi is a living village with over 100 gassho buildings still inhabited. Drones are banned everywhere. There are no rubbish bins, so take your trash with you.

Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is allowed only in the three designated areas and fireworks are prohibited. Houses are lived in, so do not enter private property for photos. Night walks are for overnight guests only, day visitors cannot see the village at night.

Adding Gokayama or Takayama

The World Heritage listing covers three villages: Ogimachi here, plus Ainokura and Suganuma in Gokayama. The Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Bus Tour from Kanazawa, the Shirakawa-go, Gokayama and Wood Carving Tour from Kanazawa and the Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Nohi Bus Tour from Takayama all add a Gokayama village.

Takayama old town with its Sanmachi Suji streets pairs well and sits about 50 minutes away. The Shirakawa-go and Takayama Day Trip by Bus from Kanazawa, the JTB Shirakawa-go and Takayama Tour from Kanazawa and the Takayama and Shirakawa-go Guided Day from Takayama cover both in one day.
